Kentucky History and Genealogy Network, Inc.

Our History
Marty Wyatt started his Facebook account in 2009 as a way to share old pictures and items of Kentucky history that were of interest to his Southeast Kentucky friends. Before long, the collection of items grew so large and diverse they were organized and categorized into separate photo albums. As the albums grew in number, so did the requests for material and information from other areas of Kentucky. The popularity and number of albums outgrew what an individual account could hold and few Facebook Groups were created to better accommodate the history and genealogy materials. Initially, there were a few county and special interest groups that were an instant success as Facebook began emerging into the market at that time as a platform option for history and genealogy research.
The groups continued to grow in number and members and it was necessary to recruit administrators from the membership to manage, monitor and promote the groups. At last count, that single Facebook page with postings of old pictures and historical narratives had grown into a Facebook network of 57 county groups; 12 regional groups; 21 special interest groups; a website and more is in the planning stages. When the idea of a website was being considered, a descriptive name was needed to coordinate with and relate to the Facebook groups. “Kentucky History and Genealogy Network” filled the bill and so it became.
In 2016, the decision was made to incorporate as a Kentucky Nonprofit Corporation. An organizational Board of Directors was recruited and work began. Effective October 1, 2016, the Kentucky History and Genealogy Network, Inc. (KHGN, Inc.) became a legal entity. Application was made to the Internal Revenue Service for recognition as a tax exempt charitable and educational organization under §501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. IRS approved the application effective with the date of incorporation, October 1, 2016.

What We Do
Our operation as a network can best be described by Aristotle’s adage–”The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” We have many individual parts but connecting all of them under the KHGN, Inc. umbrella increases their utility, benefit and enjoyment for our membership and affiliates.
We are a nonprofit organization and all revenues over and above operating expenses will be applied to resources and services. There will never be a charge for the information or services we provide.We have always listened to the needs and ideas of our Facebook members, administrators, and other interested parties who use our platform. That guidance has led and will continue to lead us into the future as we strive to grow and benefit the public we serve. Toward that end, our aim and purpose is to:
●Foster interpretation, preservation and a deeper understanding and appreciation for Kentucky’s rich history and the heritage, culture and traditions of its people;
●Operate as a service organization that provides resources, encourages and promotes research, study, publication, education and communication of Kentucky’s history and family genealogy;
● Provide a communications network for individuals, organizations and societies to include but not limited to interactive social media and dedicated websites ;
● Publish relevant periodicals, articles, short stories, research studies, historical documents, photographs and other media;
● Conduct history and genealogy educational projects, activities, events and programs:
● Encourage and assist family historians and genealogists with research and documentation by providing tutorials and instruction in genealogical research methods and techniques;
● Provide service opportunities for volunteering time and expertise to our common purpose.
